Why Winter is the Best-Kept Secret on the Great Ocean Road

There's a version of Apollo Bay that most people never see.

It starts in June when the weather turns cooler, and summer visitors have all packed up and headed back to Melbourne, the foreshore car park empties out, and the town settles into something quieter and altogether more honest. The cafes are still open. The ocean is still there — wilder, greener, more itself. And the Otways behind town are doing things that no summer photograph has ever done justice to.

If you've only visited the Great Ocean Road in peak season — the long-weekend traffic queuing through Lorne, the crowded lookouts at the Twelve Apostles, the bakery line forming before 8am and the long waits for coffee at almost every cafe in town — winter here might genuinely surprise you.

Here's what's actually happening in and around Apollo Bay right now.

The whales have arrived

From May through September, the Great Ocean Road coastline becomes a migratory corridor for Southern Right whales and Humpbacks, travelling north from the Antarctic to breed and raise calves in warmer waters. Apollo Bay sits right in the middle of that route.

On a clear morning — and there are plenty of them, the winter light here is extraordinary — you can stand on the Apollo Bay foreshore and watch them breach within a few hundred metres of shore. No boat. No tour. No ticket. Just you, a keep cup, and an animal the size of a bus doing something remarkable in your eyeline.

The Cape Otway Lighthouse, 30 minutes from Apollo Bay along Lighthouse Road, is one of the most reliable land-based whale watching spots on the Victorian coast. The elevated position gives you a wide view of the Bass Strait shipping lane that whales use on their migration. Go early — before the wind picks up — and bring something warm. Koalas are regularly spotted sleeping in the roadside eucalypts on the drive in, which makes the journey half the point

The Otways in winter are something else entirely

The Otway Ranges sit directly behind Apollo Bay, rising steeply from the coast into ancient cool temperate rainforest — myrtle beech, mountain ash, tree ferns older than anything you'd see in a garden. In summer they're beautiful. After winter rain, in low light, they're otherworldly.

The waterfalls run full from June through August. Beauchamp Falls, less than 45 minutes from Apollo Bay, drops through a steep fern-lined gully that genuinely stops you mid-step. Hopetoun Falls, further inland near Beech Forest, is arguably the most photogenic waterfall in Victoria and sees a fraction of the visitors it deserves. Mait's Rest Rainforest Walk — a 45-minute accessible boardwalk loop near the coast — is the most accessible introduction to what this forest actually feels like. Go on a weekday morning and you may well have it entirely to yourself.

For those who want to walk further: the Aire River Walk offers a flat, scenic route through wetland and bush with excellent birdwatching, and the clifftop track to the Marengo seal colony is barely ten minutes from Apollo Bay township — Australian fur seals haul out on the rocks year-round, and in winter the viewing platform is almost always empty.

WordFEST — Apollo Bay's literary festival

The last weekend of July brings WordFEST to Apollo Bay — a three-day literary festival celebrating Australian poetry, short fiction, and novels. It grew from the long-running Warm Winter Words event and has developed into something genuinely worth planning a trip around: readings, workshops, intimate author conversations, and the particular pleasure of being in a room full of people who take books seriously.

Apollo Bay is a surprisingly good town for this kind of thing. It has always had a strong arts and music culture — the annual Music Festival in March draws serious crowds — and that sensibility doesn't disappear in the off-season. It just becomes more concentrated, more accessible, more itself.

The Farmers' and Makers' Market — Saturdays on the foreshore

The Apollo Bay Farmers' and Makers' Market runs year-round, Saturday mornings on the foreshore. Winter doesn't diminish it — if anything, the produce is better, the seasonal vegetables more interesting, the crowd more local. You'll find direct-from-farm vegetables, artisan cheese, handmade goods, fresh bread, and the kind of unhurried conversation with producers that you simply don't get in a supermarket.

Get there before 9am. The good stuff goes.

The practical bit — planning your winter stay

Apollo Bay is 185km from Melbourne. Via the Great Ocean Road from Torquay, it's roughly 2.5 hours — and we'd always recommend arriving that way, because the coastal drive through Lorne is part of the experience. Via the inland Colac route, it's closer to 90 minutes if you need to get here quickly.
